Giorgio Persano is pleased to present Torniamo a casa, Lina Fucà’s second solo exhibition, returning to the gallery’s spaces after ten years. The exhibition brings together the video Didikidim (2021), the sculptural installations Dentro le nostre paure ci sono ferite antiche (2022–2026) and Piccola parte di me (2026), and the large-scale work on paper Torniamo a casa (2026).
What does it mean to return home? What makes a home a home? And, above all, is there a non-nostalgic way of undertaking this movement? In addressing these questions, Lina Fucà brings together fragments of her own identity and ours, recomposing them in other ways.
In Didikidim, a word meaning “to eat” in the Kotokoli language, the movement of return and renewal is first and foremost carried by the waves of the Mediterranean, whose sound mingles with voices repeating the word “to eat” in many different languages. The work originated from the artist’s work with migrants from Togo awaiting political asylum. The theme of migration strongly resonates with that of returning home, revealing how forward movement and retreat are intertwined within a single rhythm. Dentro le nostre paure ci sono ferite antiche also confronts the themes of roots and origins. The work stages the artist’s Sicilian heritage and that of the generations who preceded her, testing the weight of this inheritance. The work’s iron structures support traditional visazze, containers once used to transport grain and traditionally carried by mules. While the first two works address the idea of home primarily as a geographical place, Piccola parte di me approaches the theme from a more intimate perspective. The delicate plaster sculptures are suspended fragments of a female body. Here, returning home takes on a more personal, yet equally political, meaning. The female body has always been at the centre of struggles concerning home and shelter, particularly at the present historical moment. The work investigates what remains of this dismembered body, stained with a marine blue. Torniamo a casa, the work from which the exhibition takes its title, is a large-scale, hypnotic abstract landscape in which the contradictions linking the dual movements of return and advance, and those of identity and difference, find their place. This work on paper seeks to give form to the mirage of those who long to return home, offering a vision for the exiles of our present.
