Zena el Khalil, nata a Londra il 27 aprile 1976, vive e lavora a Beirut. Ha un Master of Fine Arts presso la Scuola di Arti Visive di NYC, un Bachelor of Graphic Design dell’Università Americana di Beirut, un certificato di 200 RYT in Nāda Yoga e +250 in Hatha Yoga dalla Yoga Alliance. Ha parlato al Nobel Peace Center di Oslo, tenuto diversi TED talks e il suo libro di memorie “Beirut, I Love You” è stato tradotto in numerose lingue in tutto il mondo. Il suo blog durante la guerra in Libano nel 2006 è stato seguito e pubblicato dalla BBC, dalla CNN, dal New York Times e dal Guardian.
Zena el Khalil ha esposto presso istituzioni e gallerie come il Mori Art Museum, in Giappone; Institute du Monde Arabe, Parigi; la Fondazione Boghossian, Bruxelles; il Royal College of Art, Londra; la National Gallery di Bosnia ed Erzegovina, Sarajevo; Galleria Giorgio Persano, Torino; la Barajeel Art Foundation, Emirati Arabi Uniti; l’Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen, Berlino; White Box, Monaco di Baviera, e la Fondazione Merz di Torino.
Nel 2012 el Khalil è stata selezionata per essere un TED Fellow e nel 2018 viene premiata con una Senior Fellowship. Nel 2017 ha ideato un articolato progetto espositivo di pace e riconciliazione, su scala nazionale, dal titolo “Sacred Catastrophe: Healing Lebanon”. Oltre a un’esposizione monografica curata da Beatrice Merz e Janine Maamari, un programma di eventi di 40 giorni ha animato il Beit Beirut – un tempo edificio covo di cecchini e devastato dalla guerra, ora trasformato in un museo simbolo del travagliato conflitto libanese. Da questo progetto è nata una pubblicazione dal titolo “Beirut. Day 41” pubblicata da hopefulmonster editore e dalla Fondazione Merz. Nel 2019 tiene la mostra personale “Astarte’s Cosmic Symphony” al Madre – Fondazione Donnaregina per le arti contemporanee, Napoli. Il progetto “Astarte’s Cosmic Symphony” fa anche parte del programma della BAM – Biennale Arcipelago Mediterraneo di Palermo nell’ambito della mostra ÜberMauer, al Convento della Magione, una delle sedi della mostra diffusa nella città.
