Nato a Solothurn, Svizzera, nel 1948.
Nel 1964 si trasferisce negli Stati Uniti. Al Swarthmore College di Philadelphia incontra David Sylvester sotto la cui guida studia Storia dell’Arte.
Dopo aver vissuto tra gli Stati Uniti e la Svizzera, nel 1979 si trasferisce in Portogallo, dove trascorrerà la maggior parte dei suoi anni, sino alla morte improvvisa, sopraggiunta nel 2013.
Pittore autodidatta, dagli anni ’70 le sue opere vengono esposte in tutto il mondo e sono presenti nelle collezioni di arte contemporanea di musei e fondazioni, tra i quali: il Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía di Madrid, il Whitney Museum of American Art di New York, il Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Centre for Contemporary Art di Lisbona, la Serralves Foundation di Oporto, il Museu Coleção Berardo di Lisbona.
