Tracce/Huellas. Opere dalla Galleria Giorgio Persano 1970-2021

The Istituto Italiano di Cultura (Italian Cultural Institute) of Madrid presents the exhibition Tracce (Traces). The exhibition aims to turn the spotlight on the main stages in the history of Galleria Giorgio Persano, tracing its fifty years of activity and, in view of its location, focusing on Italian artists.

The exhibition opens with a careful selection of multiples produced by the gallery in the 1970s, with an evident intention to democratise and make works of art more inclusive. Works by Giovanni Anselmo, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Giulio Paolini, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Salvo and Gilberto Zorio belong to this period.

It continues with representative works produced since 1970 by Mario Merz, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Marco Bagnoli, Nicola De Maria, Marco Gastini, Alfredo Romano, Nunzio, Michele Zaza, Jannis Kounellis and Michelangelo Pistoletto, all artists with whom Giorgio Persano has collaborated on major shared projects both in the gallery’s spaces and in Italian and international institutions.

Finally, in representation of new energies and directions, three younger artists are shown: Paolo Cirio, Lina Fucà and Alessandro Sciaraffa. The display of their work bears witness to the gallery’s desire for experimentation and innovation. Cirio is a hacker artist committed to revealing the dynamics underlying the information society. Through the use of video and starting from biographical experiences, Fucà deals with issues of strong social commitment. Finally, Sciaraffa investigates the intersections between sound, technology and nature.
