Ever since his early career, Paolo Grassino has explored delicate, uncertain ground, the magmatic surface of a confused, changing society that is ‘liquid’, to use a term dear to Zygmut Bauman. In the works of the Turin-born artist, matter, language and thought spread their roots into the vitality of the intimate, sinking into the very depths of life itself. In his ongoing enquiry into the meaning of our existence, Grassino expertly distils nature from artifice, literary culture from the metropolitan, staging what has now become a twenty year-long theatrical piece, playing out the drama of opposites – real/imaginary, conscious/unconscious, light/dark, noise/silence, becoming/degeneration.
In the end of something, the beginning of… the artist reflects on art itself as the construction of a dialectic space, a topos, the intimate staging of matter in full body contact with writing, architecture and symbolism. These are the motives that Paolo Grassino explores to build a careful analysis of time, history and existence. In this way, the fleeting and uncertain, fragments, the heavy and unstable, catastrophe, indifference and execution mark out the limits of a discourse on “narrative architectures”, on “abusive spaces”, splattered at times with words and slogans no longer of any clear certainty (REVOLT and WORK MAKES YOU FREE), which signal the coming of the end, in the absence of a new beginning.
The exhibition spaces of the gallery have been transformed into other space, overborne by concrete, iron, aluminium and electrical cables, by material that becomes both form and substance, elements at times real, at time symbolic, of a complex “theatre of the absurd”, forms of memory of a tranche de vie of these “human testimonies” of dramatic proportions. The architectural abuse wreaked, the pillars and walls, the crumpled lampposts, bear witness to our existential precariousness, the corrosion and inconsistency of a life system that is degraded and degrading, an analysis of contemporary society adrift.
The end of something, the beginning of… represents a momentary insight into the historical darkness we are living in, the questioning of the concepts of history and time, and the necessary will to start afresh from a tabula rasa, from the zero point of existence.
