Durante la sua carriera ha partecipato a quattro edizioni di Documenta e ad altrettante Biennali di Venezia. Tra i numerosi premi e onorificenze ricevuti, ricordiamo due National Endowments for the Arts Fellowships (1976 e 1983), una Guggenheim Fellowship (1994), il Premio Wolfgang Hahn (1995), la Skowhegan Medal for Painting/Conceptual Art (1999), il Roswitha Haftmann Foundation Prize (2015), il Wolf Prize e l’Aspen Award for Art (2017). Nel 2022 l’Arsenale di Venezia ha ospitato un’importante retrospettiva del suo lavoro. Opere dell’artista compaiono nelle collezioni del British Museum, Londra; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Art Institute, Chicago; National Gallery of Art, Washington; Centre Georges Pompidou, Parigi; Tate Modern, Londra.
